Sometimes, it's good not to plan too much before a trip. The surprise you get in making spontaneous decisions can be memorable as it did to us along the way from Petchaburi MRT station to Galaxy Tailor (when it was at its old outlet).
The non-air-conditioned restaurant offering mookata and charcoal BBQ buffet for just 399 baht (less than S$20) per person caught our attention and me being the skeptical man i always am; i asked to step in for a better understanding on what's available as part of the buffet.
Buffet variety put to shame many restaurants in Singapore! Obviously satisfied, we requested for a table for three persons. Sticker pasted on our tee shirt - there were two types of buffet and ours were the more expensive one that included live seafood.
Since the staff would take a while to prepare the equipment, i shall make use of my precious time to take pictures of the food for your reference!
Let's start with the seafood section which included flower crabs, prawns, squid, mussels, clams, cockles, oysters and others! To be totally honest, i am a bit hesitant to take the seafood since my stomach has always been such a weakling.
Lazy ones can grab the already cooked crabs! Again, the kiasi (afraid to die) Singaporean attitude came into play here; how long have they been cooked, still fresh etc etc.
Other ready-to-eat food consisted of typical Thailand fare, sushi, fruits, Thai desserts and ice cream! But i am so not going to waste my limited tummy space on cooked food when the main objective should be BBQ and steamboat!
Meat-time! There were no label for many of them and i did a lot of rough guessing. Thankfully, i do know how my favourite pork belly looks like! As we were quite early, many of the ingredients were covered using cling wrap.
Tank filled with swimming prawns! Now, i was thinking that a living prawn would logically kick a big fuss when it is being barbecued and that can create quite a bit of a mess for us greedy humans. Hence, i observed to see what other diners were doing.
Throw the live prawns into the pan that's filled with ice! They will struggle but will stop moving after a while. That's when you should move them to the BBQ grill. Oh my gosh, the way i describe it sounds so morbid!
Aside from the live prawns, i would strongly recommend the meat skewers above! More on them shortly when we moved on to the next segment of this post; the cooking!
Oh, before that, these were the two huge pots of dipping sauce! Even though we don't get to make our own dip (like the kind Upin Hot Pot), i am totally fine with what's available so long they are palatable.
Now, the completed setup! Mookata plus a charcoal grill; frankly, i am not much into steamboat using the mookata apparatus and whacked most of the food on the barbecue instead.
Live prawns didn't disappoint with their extremely fresh (as expected), crunchy meat and decent size. How i wish the grill was bigger so that we can put more on it!
I didn't count the number of live prawns that went into my tummy; maybe about a kilogram or so to make my money worth the deal! Just put it in comparison; back in Singapore, a kilogram of fresh prawns would likely be about S$20-30.
Loving this marinated pork belly! Decided to put it up on this post so that i would know what to have when i revisit Family Seafood BBQ in the future!
Marinated meat skewers that were so yummy; i had like about five of them! Generous amount of meat that was tender with an addictive lemongrass marination.
Ending the meal almost two hours later! As it can get quite warm, the best time to drop by is actually at night when temperature is a tad cooler and you might be lucky enough to get a breeze.
=====
In short, we had a great meal and even though it has been about three months, i am still craving for the live prawns, the skewers of lemongrass-infused meat and the unforgettable garlicky dip!
