In a typical coffee shop in Singapore, it's common to find snack / dessert stalls selling popiah, rojak, pancake etc but something else stood out when we were checking out the West Coast branch of Ah Hoe Mee Pok.
Oimo Traditional Japanese Sweets - in addition to its colourful facade, i was taken aback by the products for sale as they were, simply put, sweet potatoes! You read right - just sweet potatoes; the kind i can easily get from the wet market two hundred meters away.
Nevertheless, our curiousity was piqued and heck, might as well give it a try since we were already there! The numbers don't refer to the ranking of the tubers and you would have to refer to the board next to the display to have a slight inkling on the variety the number belongs to!
Aside from no 5 and no 6, we honestly have no idea what the rest mean! To play safe, we opted for the very conservative "purple sweet" priced at S$2.50 per 100 grams.
This one bugger cost my colleague almost $5! For that pricing with a top up of about S$1 or S$2 more, i know i can get a bag of five Indonesian honey sweet potatoes!
Oooh, so purplish to the extent i suspected a massive dosage of food colouring! Kidding as there are indeed purple coloured sweet potatoes in the market, yes, even the wet markets.
Texture was mushy and it's almost like eating mashed sweet potatoes from a plate even though we were in fact eating it straight from the source! As the name suggested, it was sweet yet not to the level of over-sweetness brought on by caramelised layers seen in some shops.
There's indeed a difference in the quality as i can easily peeled off the "flesh" with minimal efforts. I know my younger sister would definitely love this; a pity the location is too far for her! And i doubt she would pay that much for sweet potatoes. p.s. her record was a cooking pot-full of sweet potatoes!
