Hit and Run Involving Only Vehicles (Thankfully)

While everyone in Singapore is likely to touch on the worsening haze (the last i read, primary and secondary schools would be closed tomorrow), i would like to share on a hit and run accident that happened right in front of me at a multi-storey carpark today.

The culprit is the van shown in the above photo and the witnesses comprise of me, my mum and Alex. I was giving way to the van that was turning out from the parking lot and in his/her haste, the driver turned too soon; resulting in the bumper scraping the side of its 'neighbour'.

Thinking i would be punished with a longer wait, i was shocked to see the van moving off with not a care of what had just happened! Alex, being the kinder soul who couldn't stand any injustice, decided to paste a note on the victim's car, detailing what had happened with inclusion of his mobile number.

See the paint that was scraped off and the dent on the car? That's exactly the same spot where it was hit by the van. There was even a piece of bumper that could act as evidence.

You may check out the picture taken while we were waiting in line to exit the carpark; the arrow sign clearly shows a damaged bumper. Anyway, this isn't supposed to be a human search for the van's driver as the victim would file an insurance claim against the vehicle.

Frankly, there could be many reasons why the van driver didn't stop and sometimes, circumstances do bring out the worst in people. Nevertheless, it's good that no one is injured and it's best to let the insurance companies trash out the claims.

Jerald is 8!

September is a busy month; not just physically but also financially as three members of my immediately family have birthdays on the same month!

Jerald is only the second one by the way and although i may splurge a bit more in September, i did so willingly so long my loved ones are happy to receive their presents! However, i would like to make a simple point here; money sometimes could not buy happiness.

At times, your company is way more valuable, especially for the older folks.

Enough on sentimental messages, which come really easier as i age. Coming back, Jerald is finally eight and this big boy is now in primary two; it doesn't seem that long ago when i could still carry him using one arm!

Start of the birthday song - even though i am unmarried, i can understand the joy that kids bring to the household; well, until they grow into teenagers. Funny that we adults have all been through that rebellious stage yet couldn't fathom why teenagers behave that way!

There's a reason for Jovyn's expression and it would become more obvious as the medley of birthday songs reaches its end. Want to guess what she did?

That brat blew the candles immediately; leaving Jerald with not even a single lighted candle! Poor birthday boy was kind enough for us to relight one of the candles so that he can perform the customary gesture.

And wasn't he lucky to have gotten the kisses from two pretty gals?! Jovyn, as usual, was eyeing the ice cream cake we got from Island Creamery

Blowing the candles was the highlight for the kids and cutting cakes were in fact secondary; hence, Jerald didn't protest when Jovyn insisted on holding the knife to cut HIS cake! On the cake, it was better than the one we got for Mum; the cookie and cream ice cream was creamilicious with chunks of cookies!

Honmono Sushi @ Central World Shopping Centre [Bangkok]

The irony was heavy; i appeared to be having more food from the land of the rising sun rather than the land of smiles when i was in Bangkok! To think that Thai cuisine was in fact big business in Singapore; think Mookata, tom yum goong etc.

Nevertheless, this shall be my 3rd and last Japanese meal on my 3rd day in Bangkok! Frankly, i couldn't quite remember why we decided on Honmono Sushi since there were quite a few other Japanese restaurants in the same complex.

Thank god for the bright lighting which made taking photos much easier. In my opinion, the control of lighting is key to taking better photos!

Honmono means "real" in Japanese and the restaurant took pride in importing the freshest ingredients from the "Japanese Market"; which i assumed is in Japan? With that in mind, i guess it's fair to mention at this point that there's a price premium on their offerings!

Otsunami
Some kind of snacks / appetisers that came free! The prawns had the crunch similar to those prawn crackers, albeit in its most natural form and flavour. Edamame beans were okay while the ikan-bilis-thingy was more like fish bone and was flavoured just nice without being overly salty.

Chawanmushi
At 150 baht (S$6), this was expensive for such plain presentation! Dig further and be amazed by its inclusion of fish cake, mushrooms, thick chunks of fish and chicken and even a prawn! The chawanmushi guru, our dear Alex, was literally blown away!

Tamago Ni
Imagine the shiokness as i picked up the sushi and dumped the whole thing in my mouth! This was good even though i used to have the impression that you could hardly go wrong with this sushi; wrong, i had a warm one that tasted absolutely off!

California Maki
Its cold freshness hit the spot and this was one classic example on how each ingredient had amalgamated together to present that absolute tastiness! I couldn't even remember what those ingredients were as we happily devoured them in no time.

Gyu Don
I would order a gyu don whenever i see them on the menu, especially when most economically priced Japanese restaurants in Singapore don't seem to offer them!

With reference to my favourite gyu don at Megumi Japanese restaurant, this was a major letdown! The rice was moisturised by the runny egg yolk, which was good, but the beef marination was a tad too bland in my opinion.  And why were there noodles?!?!?

Honeydew Melon
I think this would likely be part of the otsunami since we didn't pay for this. Conveniently cut for ease of cutting, this was sweet; definitely my cup of tea.

Buddy Menu with Lobster Porridge @ Orchid Live Seafood [Bah Soon Pah Road]

Stepping into Orchid Live Seafood at its Bah Soon Pah road branch feels like going back in time to the 1980s when such rustic setup was the norm and particularly for the three of us, with an average age of about 35 years old, it did evoke a sense of nostalgia!

Okay, it wasn't the first visit for Alex and myself although our dear Alex wasn't too keen to join us as he didn't quite enjoy the signature lobster porridge (using live crustaceans if i may add) the last time he visited. Whatever the case, the other friend was excited about it!

Without wanting to squeeze our brain juice on what to order, we figured the buddy menu for three persons (with inclusion of the better known dishes in the restaurant) would be just nice for us. Let's review each item individually!

Baby Kailan
Fresh and crunchy, i wondered if they were sourced from the horticulture farms right next door. Taste wise, it wasn't overwhelmingly flavourful although i would not go that direction for healthy greenies.

Live Chilli Mussels
The sole disappointment for the entire buddy menu - not so much about the taste even though the chilli was too watery in the opinion; there were too little of the pulpy mussels!

Steven Chicken
Every time this was served on the table, i would wonder in my mind if the chef should consider changing its presentation, which was just a few pathetic pieces of drumlets!

However, never be too quick to discount it! It was seasoned extremely well and delicious enough to activate the addiction gene. With the flavourful batter stuck to the bones, i had to gnaw them like a dog (albeit gracefully) to make sure i clean them up!

Lobster Porridge
Served in a humongous earthen pot, i knew this would be too much for the three of us, especially when Alex was known to be a small eater.

It was still as good and as yummy as i remember! Alex weirdly thought this was much better than his last visit and was gushing about how delicious it was. For my past review, you may wish to refer to the blog post in 2012 which detailed my first visit to Orchid Live Seafood

There's only one feedback to the operator; let the lobsters continue to simmer in the pot as the meat would harden once you take them out!

Ice Cream
To align with the rustic surroundings, what's better than serving you a stick of traditional potong ice cream! Do keep in mind that there's only red bean flavour (i think) so for those not into red beans, too bad.

Frankly, this brand of potong ice cream was really good; there were chunks of red beans and it wasn't too sweet. Totally the style that mom enjoys!

Chatuchak Weekend Market (Jatujak จตุจักร) in 2015 @ Bangkok [Thailand]

It's very hard to resist a visit to the largest market in Thailand even though i was all ready to give it a miss in my recent August trip. My travel mates eventually managed to persuade me with statements like "things might be different", "a travel to Bangkok is never complete without chatuchak" etc.

And here i was, stuck at the overhead pedestrian bridge from exit 1 at Mo Chit BTS station on a Saturday morning! One word of advice: notice that empty overhead bridge in front of me? It's linked to exit 3!!

As usual, many stalls lined the walkway leading to chatuchak market! I always regretted not spending more time at these stalls as there were so much to see and things appeared to be priced lower than those in the market.

Pedestrians taking over the road although it wasn't closed to traffic and motor vehicles continued to have the right of way! One thing for sure, the whole place seemed to be filled with Singaporeans as the period i went coincided with the long national day weekend.

Tees with adorable animal pictures selling for less than S$4 a piece for the small to medium sized. Even the XXL-sized t-shirts were going for less than S$10 each!

Flip flops for less than S$3 a pair! If you have been following the travelogue closely, you would have read that i was wearing a new pair of shoes that was giving me blisters! :(

You would never catch me wearing the above tee! If i really need to show people my abs, i would do so in the most natural way instead of hoodwinking my way through. However, i would wear it if someone offers me a substantial offer.

The way to Jatujak market wasn't far from the BTS station yet many people would be happy to fork out some cash for a drink to cool themselves in the hot and humid bangkok weather.

I am no exception but i would make a beeline towards the stall that sells orange juice! The chrysanthemum tea was even better as a thirst quencher although the sugar level might be a bit too high for your comfort. Dilute it with mineral water if you wish!

Traditional wooden games - till now, i have no idea how dominoes work as a game! By the way, this is likely going to be a photo entry as i have covered the market on quite a number of occasions. Do forgive me (and my limited vocabulary) if the content appears to be similar!

Entering the Chatuchak via the side entrance; the authority should consider demarcating this spot as an official entry point since many people come by the BTS station.

Internal street - compared to a few years ago, there were more massage parlours which made total sense as you could literally spend the whole day wearing down your shoe soles! Having the occasional massage to relax your tired feet would in fact be essential!

One reason why i refrain from drinking coconut juice (unless i am on a beach / having a seafood lunch); the lack of a proper utensil to scoop out the coconut meat!

I mentioned earlier that "a travel to Bangkok is never complete without chatuchak". At the weekend market, a visit is never complete without digging into a serving of the coconut ice cream!

At 50 Thai baht (about S$2), it was a generous scoop and you are free to add as many toppings as you want! Selections include corn, red beans, jellies, peanuts and even glutinous rice.

Shirts, tote bags, pants - gone were the days when you could find hardly any unique designs across the stalls! I would have purchased a lot more shirts if not for the fact that i am lacking wardrobe space.

Had to step out to a picture of this - the above is the official entrance which i thought would be as appropriate for the barely noticeable side entrance i shared earlier.

Sofa So Good- i am not sure if i would treat the products as sofas. Thought the word "bench" to wear / remove my shoes would be a better way to term them.

No idea what these were; designs wise, i think they were pufferfish.

The narrow, sheltered inner walkways with stalls that comprised the majority of the 8,000 said to operate at Chatuchak Weekend Market

Art gallery section for an item (be it sculpture, painting etc) to adorn your plain looking walls at home! Some can gaudy and might not be suitable for small dwellings like most HDB flats.

Maybe i should consider artistic buffalo skulls? One was crusted in gold crystals that would look absolutely stunning in a luxurious bungalow.

Loving the vibrant spread of colours!

Fruit shaped soap with fruity fragrances! Do be assured that a durian shaped soap doesn't translate directly into a pungent aroma! It could be mango scented.

100% grape juice! I bought a bottle at 40 baht and switched back to having my orange juice a short while later. Honestly, it didn't taste great.

These intricately designed bowls are actually wash basins!

Bet the business for the above isn't as roaring as a few decades ago when family members who traveled to Bangkok then would always bring a few back as souvenirs!

I would prefer the doggies though! Problem is how to bring them back in one piece without having to engage a forwarder.

Embroidered products - not my cup of tea obviously.

An hour into our walk and our feet were already suffering! We were not keen to be massaged outdoors where we would likely sweat like nobody's business and jumped at the sight of an air-conditioned parlour!

Ahhhhhhh - shiokness to the max, especially with the air conditioning unit blasting its cold air!

Price as attached for your reference; as with any shops in Jatujak Weekend Market, i didn't take down the address as it would be another chore to navigate your way through the numerous sections and lanes. See an air-conditioned massage parlour? Just enter!

Magnets with funny quotes and 50s, 60s images! For example: "marriage, the end of a perfectly good sex life", "Mothers! Even when they are wrong, they are right".

Shop selling crocodile skin products.

Kind of funny to have the taxidermied crocodiles, with their front paws pressed against each other, seeking for sales and donations.

Another outdoor massage parlour - as you have maybe noted by now, the services were limited to only foot, head, shoulder and / or neck massages.

Using images of Korean pop stars to showcase the products.

The crowd - if you ask me, i like to shop along the main internal walkway as it is much more spacious. Alex hates it as it requires exposing yourself to the sun and heat!

Why are so many people obsessed with the bananas design!? They may be a fashion statement but the first thing that unfortunately came to my mind was "are they trying to attract the monkeys"!? Try wearing it to the Macritchie Reservoir.

Don't you just love the image of the guilty looking pug with the following statement: urination on a tree?! With the proliferation of cheap and good design-your-own tees services, you could have designs to call your own before others start to copy!

LemonTea shop - the coincidence as we stayed in Lemontea hotel during the trip. For my review of the boutique hotel, please click here

Ultra adorable animal themed t-shirts in natural, earthy tones!

Enough said on what the shop sells; I love to watch movies but i don't really get obsessed with it, at least not to the extent of buying movie memorabilia. Not yet.

See!!! The craze over the bananas attire!

Can't they just buy something normal like the above tees?! Alright, not with that design of a marijuana field or the evil looking skull.

Eco friendly wallets made from the leaves of a tree known as Tong Tung or Dong Deng. Used mainly by the Northern Thais for packing food, the older leaves were quite commonly used for the roof which can last about 5 years!

Scarves i think? Sorry, i got trigger happy. We have to thank the Singapore government for their foresight to outlaw guns!

Cute tee shirt.

Samurai swords! Please keep in mind that such products would require clearance from the immigration office before you can bring them into Singapore.

Aside from the fruit scented soaps that i shared earlier, the soaps sold in this shop were way more expensive and some came attached with luffah for that therapeutic scrub! The scent was strong yet without wasn't overwhelming!

New building by the side which would mean more shopping to be done in the future. Maybe i should stay near Jatujak market in the future.

A student performance for donations to a hospital.

Couldn't quite remember why these coconuts had their tops burnt.

Multiple food options at the market even though it might still be quite challenging to get an air-conditioned dining establishment!

Our last stop as the weather was too warm for our comfort. Actually, we were about to leave when we saw a lot of people crowding around the stall and i guess correctly that there must be some freebies!

Just nice; a free bottle herbal drink to cool us down!

Taking a cab would be the most comfortable mode to get back to your hotel. However, the jams can be a torture especially if you are staying near Pratunam, Siam Square area. Be adventurous and take the tuk tuk!
