I love travelling overseas for a variety of reasons and one of them is because things are sometimes done differently from Singapore and that can be interesting from the eyes of a non-local.
In this case, i was at the local Hua Mum night market in Bangkok when i seriously needed a washroom! Upon reaching, i noticed it has a full-height, revolving turnstile!
Upon a closer look, i realized it has a coin machine where you put in money for entry! Now, this is worth trying out in Singapore where manpower has always been an issue and automation is a key focus of the current government.
Thinking it would cost exorbitantly for entry since there were so few washrooms in the night market, i was surprised to find out it only cost 3 baht (roughly about 12.5 Singapore cents) per person.
No coins? Rest assured that you can change your notes for coins at the manned counter. Wait; that would have negated the need for a turnstile in the first place! In Singapore context, however, we could explore note-changing machines (like those used in arcades) and vending machines for tissue and toilet paper.
How do you exit? There's a door next to the turnstile! Again, i couldn't quite understand the rationale as people who don't know would have gone in through the door for access to the washrooms! To be fair, i am guessing that 3 baht is really quite low and it might not justify the installation of another turnstile for exit.
p.s. nothing fanciful about the toilets.
